Periodontal Therapy for Saint Augustine
In the early stages of gum disease, most treatment involves two special procedures: scaling and root planing. These procedures remove plaque and tartar from around teeth, smoothing the root surfaces as a result. Antibiotics or antimicrobials may be used to supplement treatment.
In most early cases, scaling and root planing (combined with proper homecare) are enough to achieve satisfactory results. More advanced cases, however, may require surgical treatment, which involves cutting the gums—sometimes with the assistance of a laser—and removing the hardened plaque build-up and recontouring the damaged bone. The procedure is also designed to smooth root surfaces and reposition the gum tissue for easier cleaning.
